C. Max Roach is the Founder and Principal Consultant of International Schools Consulting, bringing together a rare blend of accomplished school leadership, deep pedagogical expertise, and lifetime commitment to traditional Japanese martial arts. As a Head of School and senior leader in independent and international education for more than two decades, he has successfully led day and boarding schools in the United States and abroad, including serving as:
Headmaster
Head of School
President
Division Director
Dean of Teaching and Learning
Department Chair
Founder of several 501-c(3) educational nonprofits
National Teaching Faculty (AKOM)
National Teaching Faculty Advisory Board (AKOM)
Most importantly: classroom teacher with elementary, middle, high school, professional, and collegiate experience!
In each area listed above, Max drove innovation, implemented strategic growth, strengthened enrollment, and championed a culture of academic excellence. His leadership portfolio spans all areas of school leadership and pedagogy, giving him a rich, practical understanding of how schools work from classroom to boardroom. His consistent and rapid rise through the levels of school leadership was driven by an eye for innovative problem-solving and sharp business acumen.
Although his primary work has been listed above, he has also established himself as a trusted ally, being called on to advise schools, school leaders, and non-educational nonprofits over the years. Max’s consulting work is built on a proven record of designing and managing high-impact international partnerships. As a leader in and of several international schools, he developed dual diploma programs, teacher certification initiatives, and other cross-border collaborations with partner schools in China and beyond, always with a focus on integrity, quality, and mutual benefit. He has guided institutions through strategic planning, schedule redesign, program innovation, admissions and enrollment enhancements, and culture-building efforts, helping boards and leadership teams translate ambitious visions into concrete, measurable outcomes.
Outside the boardroom, Max is a recognized expert in Japanese martial culture and history. He is the author of Japanese Swords: Cultural Icons of a Nation; The History, Metallurgy and Iconography of the Samurai Sword (Tuttle, 2010), a widely respected volume that weaves together history, metallurgy, iconography, and spirituality to illuminate one of Japan’s most enduring symbols. As the founding instructor of the Mountain Wind Dojo Group, he has trained in Japanese martial arts since 1990 and holds high-ranking black belt certifications in Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido and Aikido, working directly under orthodox headmasters. His dojos emphasize wisdom beyond knowledge, service beyond self, and honor above everything—values that inform his approach to leadership and consulting as much as they guide his practice on the mat.
Together, these experiences shape a consultant who is both strategically sharp and deeply grounded. Max is known for listening carefully, asking the right hard questions, and partnering with clients in a way that is candid, humane, and focused on real, lasting improvement. Whether he is helping a board chart its next strategic plan, coaching a new Head of School, designing an international partnership, or advising on culture and crisis, clients benefit from his global perspective, disciplined thinking, and genuine passion for helping people and schools flourish.
